Stellar Organics 2011
Stellar Organics are wine pioneers. They were the first organic wine producer to receive fairtrade certification, and the first winery to produce sulphite-free wine on a commercial scale.
The Stellar Fairtrade Workers Trust grew from a working committee established to allocate donations received after the Kranskop Bridge disaster, a truck accident that claimed the lives of 53 people in 1987. The trust serves as a forum for workers to identify their needs and manages the income derived from Fairtrade sales. The income subsidises health and childcare for Stellar employees, and funds projects to improve quality of life.
Stellar’s organic policy is commendably joined-up. Examinations of their soil has revealed large numbers of earthworms and other beneficial microbial life, and waste products are put to good use – grape skins from the wine press are composted, and organic grape seed oil made from the pips.
The organic & vegan Cabernet Sauvignon is a deepish purple tinged red. On the nose there are appealing berry and savoury characters whilst the mouth is packed with rich, robust fruit. The tannins are light, and the style is pleasingly bright, as ripe cherry and blackcurrant flavours abound.
